ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE AWARD OF A RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP

Research Fellowship (1 vacancy)

CEB-BI-05-2024

An opportunity is available for researchers to apply for a grant under the “SMARTgNOSTICS” project, part of the mobilising innovation agenda focusing on global testing and diagnostic solutions for antimicrobial resistance. This initiative, referenced as SMARTgNOSTICS and integrated into Component C5 of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), is funded by IAPMEI – the Agency for Competitiveness and Innovation, IP. Interested individuals are invited to submit their applications under the specified conditions.

Scientific Area: Biotechnology and Bioengineering

Recipient category: MSc degree holders attending a non-academic degree course integrated in the educational project of the University of Minho.

Requirement for granting the fellowship

  • The applicants may apply without prior registration in the course for which the fellowship is open. The requirement to enroll in a degree course or non-academic degree course will be verified on the date of contracting the fellowship;
  • Only fellowships whose selected applicants present a valid proof of enrollment in a degree course or non-academic degree course will be contracted, according to the type of the fellowship, issued by the academic services of the Higher Education Institution, indicating, respectively, the academic year or its duration (star and term).
  • Enrollment in non-certified courses (without curricular units) will not be considered as proof of enrollment

Candidates profile

a) Mandatory requirements:

– Master in Biotechnology, Bioengineering, Biological Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Biochemistry, or related areas;

b) Contracting requirements:

– Proof of enrolment in a non-academic degree course will be contracted, according to the type of the fellowship;

– Proof of academic qualifications completed at the deadline for applications, including those resulting from academic degree recognition processes;

c) Preferential factors:

– Know-how acquired in the academic path in biotechnology, microbiology, and molecular biology;

– Research experience in genetic manipulation of prokaryotes;

– Knowledge and experience in bacteriophage manipulation;

– Knowledge and experience in bioinformatics;

– Knowledge and experience in protein heterologous expression and its functional analysis.

Applicant Eligibility: Interested individuals must meet the eligibility conditions outlined in Article 9 of the Research Grants Regulation of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (2019).

Work Plan and Objectives: The primary objective is to develop and consolidate the scientific training of the fellowship holder through involvement in research work. The SMARTgNOSTICS project aims to create fast and miniaturized diagnostic devices for decentralized environments, enabling the detection of pathogenic microorganisms across Human Health, Animal Health, Environment, and Food Safety sectors. The specific R&D activities include:

  • Isolation and characterization of bacteriophages
  • Bioinformatics analysis of bacteriophage genomes
  • Gene cloning in E. coli
  • Heterologous expression and purification of proteins
  • Characterization of bacteriophage proteins involved in host recognition
  • Management of data obtained and communication with project partners

Applicable Legislation and Regulations: The Research Fellowship Holder Statutes, approved by Law no. 40/2004 of August 18, and its current version published by Decree-Law no. 123/2019 of August 28, govern the fellowship. Additionally, the Regulation of Scientific Research Fellowships of the University of Minho (RBIC) and the Regulation of Research Studentships and Fellowships (RBI) of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P., apply.

Host Institution and Scientific Supervision: The work will be conducted at the Centre of Biological Engineering of the University of Minho, supervised by Dr. Sílvio Roberto Branco dos Santos and Dr. Ana Cristina Afonso Oliveira.

Fellowship Duration: The grant will last for 12 months, with a provisional start date in June 2024. It will not be renewed.

Amount of the Research Grant: The monthly stipend is €1,199.64, in accordance with values published by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT I.P.). Payment will be made on the 23rd of each month through bank transfer.

Other Benefits: The grant includes reimbursement of Voluntary Social Security contributions and personal accident insurance.

Exclusivity Regime: The grantee will perform activities under exclusivity, as outlined in Article 5 of the Research Fellow Statutes and applicable regulations.

Selection Panel Composition: The selection panel consists of three effective members and two substitute members, with Dr. Sílvio Roberto Branco dos Santos serving as the president.

Criteria and Procedures for Application Assessment and Selection: Applications will be evaluated based on merit, focusing on academic path, personal curriculum, and motivation letter. Candidates with a score of less than 3 points in the Merit criterion will be excluded.

Disclosure of Results: Provisional results will be sent to applicants via email, and candidates have 10 working days to comment on unfavorable results.

Complaint and Appeal Procedures: Final results will be published on the Centre of Biological Engineering of UMinho website, and candidates may submit complaints or appeals within specified timeframes.

Fellowship Contract: The grant will be awarded through a fellowship contract between the University of Minho and the fellow, following the guidelines outlined in relevant regulations.

Term and Cancellation of Fellowship Contracts: The fellowship ends upon completion of the work plan or upon reaching the expiration date. A final report must be submitted within 30 days after the end of the scholarship.
