Research Associate in the Division of Gastroenterology

The Division of Gastroenterology in the Department of Medicine at UC San Diego is seeking a Research Associate who will perform cellular and animal lab experiments. The candidate should independently develop multiple research projects in intestinal microbiota and its relationship with liver disease, and generate animal models of alcohol-related liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and primary sclerosing cholangitis by using genetically modified animals, together with an adjusted feeding protocol. They should be able to perform experiments using molecular biology techniques such as Confocal Immunofluorescence Imaging, immunohistochemistry, FACS, ELISA, Western Blotting, PCR, RT-qPCR, drug treatment on those animals, with the knowledge of biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, and histology.

  • Advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, microbiomics, and immunology, including relevant laboratory techniques, acquired through a Bachelor’s in Biology or related field.
  • Ability to analyze next-generation sequencing (NGS) data generated from microbiome sequencing and host genomics.
  • Experience in fungal, bacterial, and viral DNA Sequencing of animal and clinical studies.
  • Working knowledge of UCSD Human Research Protections Program (HRPP/IRB) policies and Procedures.
  • Master’s or PhD preferred
