Director* Discovery

BioNTech R&D Austria is a wholly owned subsidiary of BioNTech SE, focused on the development of novel antibacterial drugs to treat persistent bacterial infections. Our development programs are based on our proprietary LysinBuilder platform, which allows the targeted development of synthetic lysins for virtually any bacterial pathogen. We use a combination of in-silico prediction, synthetic assembly and directed evolution to generate artificial lysins and develop them into drugs. The development pipeline focuses on chronic bacterial infections where antibiotics fail to cure or destroy the natural microbiomes. Our lead asset is PM-477, which we develop for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis. We also work on transforming the standard of care with lysins against several other infections and dysbioses.

As Director* Discovery at BioNTech R&D Austria you will be part of developing breakthrough alternatives to antibiotics and lead the research into new synthetic lysins. In this role you will report directly to the Managing Directors of BioNTech R&D (Austria) and become part of the management team. Your main responsibilities are:
  • Take the full responsibility to advance the discovery programs of lysins as novel antibacterials, from early screens to preclinical programs
  • Lead the ongoing development of the LysinBuilder platform including defining how to improve the in-silico algorithms, the screening platforms and technologies and the drug design capabilities
  • Manage milestone-based go/no-go decision making for the discovery programs
  • Coordinate the R&D workstreams between the lab work in Vienna, other teams within the BioNTech group, external partners, and – where relevant –academic cooperation partners
  • Supervise and lead multiple Research Leads, each of which in turn leads a research squad of Scientists (PhD) and Researchers (M.Sc. or B. Sc.)
  • Drive the development and validation of key assays and methods required to develop and evaluate potent antibacterials (e.g. potency models, biofilm models, in-vitro safety assays)
  • Ensure the establishment of standardized experimental protocols that will enable excellent data quality and reproducibility in later stages of the discovery projects
  • Ensure the documentation of results according to the BioNTech R&D Austria Quality Standards (non-GLP but closely resembling GLP), to ensure the quality of results and their documentation are acceptable to regulatory authorities, working towards a human clinical trial application
  • Drafting of patent claims as appropriate, publication of selected results in scientific journals

What you have to offer.

  • Ph.D. in biology, biochemistry or related discipline with scientific background in infectious diseases
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in basic research, translational research or pre-clinical research as a group/team leader in a biotech company or as an academic group leader
  • Scientific track record in molecular biology, structural biology and/or microbiology, ideally in one of the following fields: development of antimicrobials, human microbiome, biofilms, endolysins or bacteriophages
  • Track record of leading team members, including steering and motivating a team, ideally within a biotech company
  • Excellent publication and/or patent track record
  • Highly structured thinking including the ability to define overarching development plans and to track plan execution among different team members and internal/ external research partners
  • A genuine interest and understanding of the targeted pharmaceutical development and in particular how to bridge development programs from early discovery into pre-clinical and clinical development
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills to efficiently relay information to project teams and other key stakeholders
  • Proficiency in English (written and spoken)
